Obesity is a growing epidemic that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s a chronic condition that is associated with numerous health complications, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint pain, and sleep apnea. For many people, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are not enough to achieve long term weight loss. In these cases, bariatric surgery can help. One procedure is the Modified Duodenal Switch (ModDS). Roller Weight Loss is a leader in performing the Modified Duodenal Switch.

What is the Modified Duodenal Switch?

The ModDS is a type of weight loss surgery that combines elements of both the gastric sleeve and the traditional duodenal switch procedures. Compared to the traditional duodenal switch, the ModDS does not bypass near as much of the small intestine, which significantly decreases the risk of nutritional deficiencies without compromising weight loss. It also leaves more of the stomach compared to other bariatric surgeries allowing patients to eat a more normal diet.

The surgery takes about 40 to 60 minutes and is almost always done laparoscopically through the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery usually results in shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars and much less pain compared to open surgical procedures with large incisions.

The goal of the surgery is to help individuals achieve significant and sustained weight loss, which can improve their overall health and quality of life.

Benefits of ModDS

The ModDS offers many benefits. The ModDS can produce significant weight loss but has an added advantage – No medication restrictions like the Gastric Bypass.

It is the most effective weight loss surgery for obese patients dealing with type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that 98% of patients with type 2 diabetes have gone into remission.

ModDS offers the greatest weight loss potential of all bariatric procedures. Studies have shown that two years after surgery, patients can lose more than 95% of their excess weight. This weight loss can lead to significant health improvements, or resolution, in all major health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, joint disease, and sleep apnea.

The ModDS also allows patients to continue taking non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. This can be very important, especially for every day conditions like headaches. It also allows patients to continue taking steroids for conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Gout, Asthma, or regular problems that can occur like Poison ivy or bee stings.

The surgery can also significantly reduce the rate of malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies seen in other other surgeries while maintaining excellent weight loss.

ModDS has been a game changer for many Roller Weight Loss patients. Angela lost 190 pounds after having the ModDS. “I really wish other people knew about it because it has been amazing for me. It has given me my life back. From a total perspective, it's had me lose pretty much all the weight that I'm really interested in losing, and I've kept it off for more than a year at this point.”
